Charitable Giving in the Wake of COVID-19
This nationwide study conducted by DickersonBakker sheds light on how COVID-19 is impacting charitable giving to faith-based nonprofits. The survey was conducted from May 29 to June 22 and received responses from 1079 U.S adult donors who had given at least $1,000 to one faith-based nonprofit in 2018 and/or 2019. The median income for participants was $125,000 and median amount given to charities was $20,000 per year. The survey sheds light on the range and multiplicity of perspectives on when the economy will rebound at this point in the pandemic. Over one-third of respondents suggested that the economy would not rebound until the middle of 2021. Additionally, the survey provides perspectives on how donors are changing their giving as a result of the pandemic with 92% of respondents planning to support the same nonprofits with 8% planning to shift their donations. Approximately 36% of respondents report giving more because they are in a better financial situation this year whereas 39% plan to decrease giving because their income declined as a result of COVID.
