This five-year mixed-methods research project will gather both broad, nationally representative surveys and detailed ethnographic case studies of how religious congregations are changing and adapting in the wake of COVID-19. The research from each of these components of the study are available at the sections below as findings become available.

National survey research
In conjunction with the denominational research partners of Hartford Institute’s Faith Communities Today (FACT) project, this endeavor includes two national key informant surveys, one large member survey, one longitudinal panel survey of congregations, and multiple targeted topical surveys of congregations and their leaders.

Regional ethnographic research
This is an in-depth study of congregations within eight representative cities from across the country. The exploration at these sites will include detailed ethnographic case studies of 12 churches within their communities (leading to a total of approximately 96 congregational case studies).
